Emerald: a journey to the heart of Colombia’s mines

To enter the world of Colombian emerald is to immerse oneself in a rich and fascinating history, a blend of tradition, discovery and excellence. During my recent trip to Colombia, I had the opportunity to discover this universe in all its facets: from the mythical Chivor and Muzo mines to exclusive meetings with the industry’s leading experts and players.

Exclusive interviews with emerald experts

This journey gave me the opportunity to interview some key figures, starting with Ricardo Jimenez, an exceptional lapidary who has cut some of the most emblematic emeralds. I also spoke with Ronald Ringsrud, world-renowned author and specialist, and Rodrigo Giraldo, gemologist emeritus based at Bogotà. George Smith, a respected dealer operating via Alpine Green, shared his expertise on the current market, while Jimmy Molina, Victor Carranza’s former right-hand man, offered a unique insight behind the scenes and into the history of Colombian emeralds. These encounters gave me a 360-degree view of this captivating universe.

In the heart of legendary mines

Visiting the Chivor and Muzo mines, nestled in the Boyacá region, was an unforgettable experience. These sites, true treasures of Colombian soil, bear witness to centuries of extraction of some of the world’s most beautiful and prized emeralds. The raw beauty of the landscapes and the history rooted in these lands reinforce Colombia’s unique place in the global market.

A dive into the history of emerald : from Bogotà to Florida

My trip also took on a historical dimension with an exceptional meeting in Sebastian, Florida, with the grandson of Mel Fisher, famous discoverer of the wreck of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha. This Spanish galleon, sunk in the 17th century, carried a fortune of gold, silver and emerald from Colombian mines. This stopover provided a link to the ancient history of the Colombian emerald market.
